Eugenia Place, nestled in the heart of English Bay, is one of the most iconic buildings in Vancouver’s West End. Designed by Henriquez Partners Architects and Ron Rule Consultants Landscape Architecture in 1987, its most striking feature is the large oak tree crowning the tower—a tribute to the towering cedar and fir trees that once covered this land. Before urban development, this area was part of a thriving coastal temperate rainforest, home to diverse wildlife and stewarded by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations for thousands of years. The current tree, a pin oak, was planted in 2017 for its resilience, ability to thrive in urban conditions, and balanced weight distribution. A one-of-a-kind landmark and a reminder of the natural environment that once was.
